Chiropractic and Children

This is always my most asked question- is chiropractic good for kids? The easiest way to answer that question- YES! The best time to start chiropractic is as an infant. There are even associations dedicated solely to the chiropractic practices involving children, and that says a lot. But I understand that parents want an explanation and research in order to make the best decision for their child.

Let’s start by talking about the 3 T’s- traumas, toxins, and thoughts. These 3 things are responsible for any type of dysfunction in your body. Trauma is pretty self explanatory, toxins are anything we put into our body that may have a negative affect on it, and thoughts are mental stressors. Birth is a trauma- a wonderful trauma, but a trauma for both mom and baby. For now, we are going to skip right over the chiropractic effects on mom (I can discuss that later) and focus on baby. When your unborn child is in the womb, the amount of exposure to the 3 T’s is minimal, especially if you are getting prenatal care and following recommendations from your doctor. Once your child is born, they are very quickly introduced to those 3 T’s, which is going to lead to dysfunction.

During childbirth, babies are experiencing anywhere from 60 pounds of pressure all the way up to almost 120 pounds of pressure, depending on your delivery experience. Was suction used? Were forceps used? What was baby’s position? How long was labor? All of these factors, and many more, are going to determine the amount of pressure that your child is withstanding during birth. Let’s assume you had a normal delivery, no complications, no suction, no forceps. Your child is likely being pulled out with about 60-80 pounds of pressure. Think about your tiny 8 pound newborn child having 10 times his/her body weight of pressure and force right from birth. THIS is why birth is traumatic, no matter how great it is.

The strain that this pressure is going to put on the muscle, joints, ligaments, nerves, etc. is going to have a direct influence on how your child’s nervous system is functioning. Our nervous system-our brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves throughout our entire body, controls how our entire body functions, grows, and heals. You can see how alterations can lead to major long term deficits if they are not corrected. Keep in mind this is all childbirth alone, we haven’t even started talking about all the changes your child is experiencing as they learn to lift their head, crawl, walk, run, and of course, fall! In short- our nervous system literally controls us, so we need to keep it functioning as best as we can. Que chiropractors!

So how do we know if our child needs chiropractic? The answer is that every child should see a chiropractor. If as an adult you experienced high amounts of pressure like a child does during birth, you would likely have symptoms such as headaches, muscle pain, backaches, etc. Children show symptoms differently than adults do. Some children show no symptoms at all, but others show a variety of issues including ear infections, reflux, colic, latching issues, torticollis, diarrhea, constipation, etc.

So once you have decided to try chiropractic care for your child, what does it look like? A chiropractic adjustment on an infant is about the same amount of pressure that you would apply to a tomato to check if it is ripe or the amount of pressure you would apply to your eyelid. It is extremely light, to the point that a lot of babies will actually sleep through their adjustments! As they grow the adjustments change, but are still very light. As chiropractors we try to make adjustments fun for kids so that they look forward to coming to see us.

My last question is- what is stopping you from trying chiropractic for your child? Chiropractic is a natural healthy method that can help you avoid using medications- which as children can have a major negative effect on the growth and development.

I hope this helped answer your general questions about if chiropractic is good for children and why it is! I would love to go into further detail about each of these “symptoms” that children show and how chiropractic can specifically help those issues, so in my next post I will go through some of these things. If you have any specific symptoms or problems that your child is dealing with, feel free to reach out to me and I can add it to my list of things to talk about.

Stay safe and healthy!
