Chiropractic and Pregnancy

Many people wonder- is chiropractic good for pregnancy? There are so many different aspects of pregnancy that chiropractic can have such a positive influence on, not just while carrying your child, but for after delivery too. The female body goes through so many changes throughout pregnancy in order to prepare the mother for childbirth. All of these things are happening over 9 months, and these changes are going to put stresses on different parts of the body. Then delivery happens and all at once, you no longer are carrying a child. The slow progression that your body goes through while carrying a baby can lead to pain, muscle aches, headaches, carpal tunnel, plantar fasciitis, ligament discomfort, and many other things. The fast changes after childbirth can also lead to similar symptoms, but also can lead to ligament instability. The good news is that chiropractic adjustments can help ease the discomforts that may come with pregnancy and help to make labor and delivery easier and more enjoyable.

Let’s talk about some of the changes your body goes through as you’re carrying a child. In the first trimester, there are a lot of changes occurring, which leads to nausea, breast tenderness, fatigue, cravings, constipation, etc. Getting adjustments during the first trimester is going to help assure that you and your baby are growing properly, both functionally and physiologically. This happens by keeping your nervous system free of interference. These adjustments will not only keep the pelvis and sacrum balanced as the baby continues to grow, but also eases pressure on the nerves, joints, and ligaments throughout pregnancy. These safe and gentle adjustments will also remove tension from the ligaments that support the uterus, which will allow it to move as intended throughout pregnancy. Keep in mind what we talked about in previous posts- the nervous system controls your entire body, and when it is functioning at its best, the unpleasant changes and discomfort can be eased.

During the second and third trimesters, the body is going to change at a faster rate. This is going to lead to more aches and pains that can be associated with pregnancy. As the belly grows outward, the pelvis is going to tilt forward. This tilting can lead to low back pain and even sciatica. Since there is now more weight on the front of your body, you will naturally pull your shoulders back in order to assure that you aren’t falling forward and to shift your center of gravity back. This is going to put more pressure on the back between the shoulders. This is also when pregnant women can start to get rib pain and experience some difficulties with breathing. As the neck moves forward and the head moves back, a pregnant woman might start to experience symptoms such as neck pain, headaches, and carpal tunnel. On top of all of this, the knees begin to hyperextend and the feet begin to flatten, which may lead to lower extremity pain and tightness. As you can see, there’s a lot of room for discomforts to develop over this time and our goal is to help relieve those pains so that you can enjoy pregnancy to the fullest.

I’m going to share a study about a woman that was experiencing low back pain and sleep disturbances through her pregnancy. She sought out chiropractic treatment after pain began in the low back and between the shoulders at 10 weeks into her pregnancy. After 16 adjustments over 3 months, the patient was able to work and function without pain, and then decided to continue with her adjustments through the remainder of her pregnancy. Adjustments for pregnant women can look a little different than adjustments than the general public receives. Pregnant women will likely be treated with a technique called Websters, which is a series of adjustments and muscle work that are specifically targeted toward the changes that come with pregnancy.

The female body was made for carrying a child, so our ultimate goal is to make that experience as comfortable and enjoyable as possible for both you and your growing baby.
